Senate Passes Trump’s Budget – A Massive Giveaway to Billionaires that Cuts SNAP, Fuels Deportations, and Guts Climate Protections
Today, the Senate passed Trump’s so-called “big, beautiful” budget – a massive giveaway to billionaires and corporate polluters at the expense of everyday people. Similar to the House version, the bill slashes billions from SNAP and Medicaid, while pouring billions more into ICE and detention, and guts critical climate and clean energy programs.
“This bill is a betrayal of everyday people,” said Nichelle Harriott, Policy Director at the HEAL Food Alliance. “It rips food from families’ tables and fails to support or protect the people who grow and prepare our food, all while giving the ultra-wealthy yet another tax break. We have enough to go around, but this bill shows those in power are choosing profit over working people. Let’s be clear: this bill doesn’t just attack programs, it attacks people. It’s meant to keep working people poor, afraid, and divided. Farmers are losing land, families are unable to put food on the table, all while Congress is giving big businesses more tax breaks. This isn’t governance, it’s greed in action.”
SNAP helps 41 million people buy groceries, supporting local stores and farms. But instead of expanding it, this bill takes food away from kids, caregivers, and veterans to pad the pockets of the rich. The bill also fuels deportations, allocating $30 billion to ICE and detention centers that target people seeking a better life, many of whom power our food system. Now, the final bill, expected to be signed by Trump, will be a misguided course of action for many years to come. The bill strips away climate protections in the middle of a dangerously hot summer by rolling back clean energy investments, pollution safeguards, and climate resilience funding. According to the Congressional Budget Office, this bill cuts resources for the poorest Americans by 4%, while boosting gains for the wealthiest by the same margin. By cutting benefits like SNAP and Medicaid, this bill pulls the rug from under the very workers the Trump administration promised to support during his presidential campaign.
HEAL urges the public: stay informed, stay organized, and keep fighting. We deserve a government that invests in food, care, and climate, not fear, division, and corporate greed.
